Why choose a Medela breast pump?

It can be hard choosing the right breast pump to fit into your life as a breastfeeding mum. With a full suite of manual, single electric, double electric and wearable pumps to choose from, we offer a range of breast pumps suitable for a variety of different needs. Our Science of Care mantra ensures that always have the health and wellness of mum and baby in the forefront of our minds when designing our products.

How do I choose the right breast pump?

Every mum and baby has different needs, and these needs can change along the course of your breastfeeding and expressing journey.

A manual or electric pump?

Manual breast pumps are cheaper than electric models, quiet and handy for occasional expressing. But they can be hard work if used frequently, as you need to keep pumping the handle to create the vacuum. Electric breast pumps are easier and more convenient to use, as the motor does the pumping for you.
2-Phase Expression technology mimics a baby’s natural sucking behaviour. At the beginning of each breastfeeding session, your baby begins using short, fast sucks to stimulate your let-down reflex. Once the milk begins to flow, your baby will change to slower, stronger sucking that releases as much milk as possible. Medela developed 2-Phase Expression technology to replicate this feeding pattern which had led to a more effect and natural way to express.
As a convenient side note, all Medela electric breast pumps can also be battery operated, either with a rechargeable battery pack or standard AA batteries.

A single or double breast pump?

A single electric breast pump is ideal for expressing while simultaneously breastfeeding. Our Medela Mums have also said it is a great portable option when they are on the run. A double breast pump (which draws milk from both your breasts simultaneously) is more convenient for expressing regularly – whether for medical reasons, you have limited time to express or even because you’ve returned to work. As well as halving the amount of time you spend expressing, a double breast pump delivers 18% more milk on average than pumping from each breast in turn. This makes it a great choice for busy mums. And the milk you obtain when?double pumping?has a higher fat and calorie content?too.

What can I store my breast milk in?

Many mothers find it convenient or even necessary to collect their breast milk and store it to be used later. Such is the case for mothers who are?returning to work, or school or if they are separated from their infant due to health issues.
You can store your milk in bottles that are made without BPA, such as Medela's Breast Milk Collection Bottles or in reusable bags specifically designed for breast milk, like our Breast Milk Storage Bags
Having a readily available supply in the fridge or freezer is something that mums find incredibly helpful when multiple feeds are needed throughout the day.

Does Medela offer a warranty on their breast pumps?

Yes! Medela offers a two-year global warranty on all of its breast pumps. Just keep your receipt handy to share with our friendly Customer Service Team.

What are the essentials I need as a first-time mum?

Being prepared for the birth of your baby is critical to becoming successful from the beginning. A great place to start is a quality nursing bra, something lightweight and comfortable that you can unclip easily and quickly.
When you are breastfeeding, it is important to be prepared for what potentially comes along with it. Sore, cracked nipples and leaking breasts will likely be a part of your day-to-day. Making sure you have some disposable breast pads on hand will be of great relief to you when you find you need them, which could be both day and night.
Sometimes, attaching our baby to the breast early on in their birth is a hard thing to accomplish, and a great way to initiate more of a milk supply is by expressing. This means you will likely need a good breast pump. There are many reasons why a new mum chooses to pump, and those needs can continue to evolve throughout the entire breastfeeding journey. With Medela’s wide range to choose from it’s a great place to start your research and decide what will work best for you.
Along with the breast pump, you will need something to store your milk in once you have finished pumping. Our Breast Milk Collection and Storage Bottles are perfect to keep your liquid gold safely secured. Alternatively, our Breast Milk Storage Bags can be kept upright in the fridge or freezer, taking up minimal space in the fridge but giving you maximum milk storage capacity!
As mentioned above it is so incredibly important to make sure you have the correctly sized breast shield attached to your pump. The last thing you want to cause yourself is additional pain when it comes to your breastfeeding journey. If the right size doesn’t come with your pump, measure yourself and ensure you have the correct size to get optimal output.
