What furniture is needed in a nursery?

There are a few pieces of nursery furniture that are essential for your baby's room, to go along with your baby bedding.

  • A crib or bassinet for the baby to sleep in
  • A changing table or pad to change nappies or diapers
  • A glider or rocking chair for nursing and soothing
  • A dresser or nursery drawers for storing clothes and other supplies

Of course, there are many other pieces of furniture that can be helpful in a nursery, like a toy chest or bookcase, but these are the essentials.

What is a bassinet?

A bassinet is a small bed that is specifically designed for infants. Bassinets are often oval or rectangular in shape, and they usually have sides that are tall enough to keep the baby safe and secure inside. Many bassinets also come with a canopy or drape to keep the baby shielded from bright lights or drafts.

What is a co-sleeper?

A co-sleeper is a type of bassinet that attaches directly to the side of an adult bed. This allows the baby to sleep in close proximity to the parents, which can be helpful for nighttime feedings or comforting. Co-sleepers often have mesh sides to allow for airflow, and some even come with built-in storage pockets.

What is a cot?

A cot is a bed that is larger than a bassinet and is meant for toddlers or young children. Cots typically have sides that are low enough, or can be lowered, to allow the child to get in and out of them easily, and they often come with cot mattress covers and pillows. Some cots even come with built-in nursery storage for clothing, toys, or blankets.

What is the difference between cot and a portacot or travel cot?

A portacot or travel cot is a type of cot that is designed to be easily portable. These cots often have foldable legs and can be quickly disassembled for storage or transport. Portacots are generally smaller than traditional cots, and they may not come with all of the same features (like built-in storage, for example). However, they can be a convenient option for sleepovers and for families who travel frequently or who have limited space in their home.

How big are toddler beds?

Toddler beds are slightly larger than a crib or cot, but they are smaller than a twin bed. They typically have low sides to make it easy for the child to get in and out, and some even come with side panels or rails to stop your little one from falling out of the bed. Many toddler beds also come with mattress covers and pillows.

Why use a change table?

A change table is a piece of furniture that is designed specifically for changing diapers. Change tables often have a raised edge to keep the baby from rolling off, and they usually have a diaper-changing pad on top. Many change tables also come with built-in storage shelves or drawers to hold diapers, wipes, and other supplies.

Do you need a special nursing chair?

There are many types of chairs that can be used for nursing, but some chairs are specifically designed for this purpose. Nursing chairs often have wider seats and higher backs to support the mother while she is nursing, and they sometimes come with built-in storage pockets or ottomans. Many nursing chairs also recline slightly to make it more comfortable for the mother and baby.

What is the difference between baby drawers and a normal dresser?

Nursery drawers are smaller than a typical dresser, and they often have shallower drawers to make it easier to reach in and grab items. Many baby dressers also come with a changing pad on top, which can be handy for diaper changes. Baby furniture is often designed with softer edges and rounder corners to help prevent injuries if the child bumps into it.
