Choose The Best Baby Car Seat For Your Children's Age and Size

One of the most important purchases you'll make as a parent is a baby car seat. Choosing the right seat is essential to keeping your child safe while travelling.

Our range of seats includes different sizes, features and options from brands including Bugaboo, Infasecure, Baby Jogger, TOMY and more.

There are a few things to consider when purchasing a car seat for your baby. First, you need to decide which type of seat is best for you and your baby.

What type of baby car seat is best?

Babies and children must be safely fastened in the correct car seat based on their age and size. The 3 segments and associated products are:

  • Newborn to 6 months: You'll need an approved rear-facing car seat or Baby Capsule
  • 6 months to 4 years: You'll need an approved rear-facing or forward-facing car seat (otherwise known as a Convertible Car Seat)
  • 4+ years: You'll need an approved forward-facing car seat or Booster Seat

All car seats available at Babies"R"Us are approved and comply with strict Australian Standards.

What is a Baby Capsule?

A Baby Capsule is specifically made to fit a baby's size in their first 6 months and attaches to the backseat of your car using the seatbelt or ISOFIX anchor points.

Capsules provide a great feature in that if your baby falls asleep in the vehicle, you can detach the capsule and bring it with you while uninterrupting their precious sleep. You can also easily transport a capsule from the vehicle to a compatible pram and vice-versa.

A Baby Capsule may also be suitable for a premature or low-birthweight baby. However, given the capsule is specifically designed for a baby's small size in their early months, you will also need to purchase a Convertible Car Seat past 6 months of age.

What is a Convertible Car Seat?

A Convertible Car Seat is a vehicle seat that can be used in both the rear-facing and forward-facing positions. Convertible seats are suitable from birth to 4+ years.

Rear-facing car seat installations are suitable for babies up to 6 months. The seat is installed in the backseat facing the rear of the car. This is the safest type of car seat for young babies.

Forward-facing car seat installations are for children between the age of 6 months to 4 years. The seat is installed in the backseat facing the front of the car.

What is a Booster Seat?

A booster seat is a car seat for kids aged 4+ years. It is also known as a child safety seat or car booster.

The booster seat is installed using the lap and shoulder seat belts. It lifts your child up so that the adult seatbelt fits properly across their chest and hips.

Booster seats provide a safe and comfortable way for your child to travel in the car. They offer superior protection in the event of a collision and can be used in a variety of vehicles.

How do I install a seat into my vehicle?

Once you've decided which type of car seat you need, you'll also need to decide on installation options. You can install the seat yourself, however, we recommend using an accredited child restraint fitting service. You can use this tool to find a local accredited child restraint fitting service.
